Warming Up Urban Miss
Borrowing my big brother's mix tapes soon inspired me to make my own. My musical tastes have been stretched since my checkout girl days of spending Saturday job earnings on random 7"s from charity shops and 12"s down Woolworths (remember when they used to sell records?). University then kicked off my DJing hobby with R&B nights.
But blessed with some great influences (you know who you are) my tastes are more diverse now. There's so much good new music out there and I'm constantly learning. So I've put together a warm selection of tunes from both sides of the Atlantic: some meaningful lyrics that bring a smile to my face and positive tunes that keep me dancing throughout the week (even if it's just in my front room).
Favourites
- Nitin Sawhney - Sunset
- I could only start the mix with some sunshine. Nitin Sawhney is a genius at blending international sounds and a key player in bringing modern Asian music out into the open. He was always in the record bag when I used to play at Outcaste at Notting Hill Arts Club and I will never forget his outdoor set at Big Chill 2005. What a soothing way to round off the weekend.
- Rufus - Please Pardon Me (You Remind Me)
- A nice gentle start with some lovely old time vocals. Familiar faces - I'm sure we've all been there, thinking we recognise someone who turns out to be a stranger.
- Shaun Escoffrey - Days Like This
- Mr Escoffrey is one of the most under-rated soul singers to come out of the UK. With DJ Spinna's magic, they conjure up an uplifting tune. Encouraging a sentimental feeling, for me this tune brings back memories of Notting Hill Carnival and any day of the year when the sun catches me by surprise.
- Tammy Payne - Take Me Now
- This must be my favourite track from the Talkin Loud archives. A classic love tune with soulful melodies - one for all those guys who are afraid to make the first move!
- Pete Rock & CL Smooth - They Reminisce Over You
- I remember watching Pete Rock & CL Smooth videos over and over again on MTV back in the day and I fell for their talents straight away. One of the key Hip Hop tunes in my collection, with CL reflecting on childhood memories.
- Sylvia Striplin - You Can't Turn Me Away
- I borrowed this from my big bro Vinyl Messiah about 4 years ago now (don't worry, it'll be back home soon). What can I say? Sylvia knows what she wants and with her persistent lyrics, you can't help but feel romantic. This has to be one for the dance floor at my wedding.
